What it does: Also known as milk acid, lactic acid is an AHA. It improves fine lines, sun spots, age spots, and uneven skin pigmentation. Unlike most other acids, lactic acid is non-drying and actually helps the skin to draw in and hold water (a humectant).
How to do it: Apply to problem areas. Let dry. If you are used to AHAs or if the lactic acid % is low enough, it is safe to leave on. If you are new to AHAs and peels, wash off with water after 5-15 minutes***.
***The length of time really depends on factors I wouldn’t know, like your prior experience with acid peels, the strength of your lactic acid product, and the acid’s pH level.
Because of this, the best advice I can give you on the time is - use your own good judgement. If it stings, wash it off quickly.
As your skin builds up a resistance to it over subsequent applications, you can leave it on your skin longer, or layer it for more effectiveness.
In general, lactic acid is gentle and safe for brown skin. Start at a low concentration and work your way up.
Why it helps: Like all AHAs, lactic acid exfoliate skin cells, and increase turnover.
I like trying more natural ways to lighten skin.
